Public Library Certification/Civil Service

Public librarian jobs are available throughout New York State as civil service positions. The requirements for civil service are largely dependent on the county in which you live. However, a New York State issued Public Librarian Certification is required for most Librarian I civil service positions in every county.

This certification is issued by the New York State Department of Education, and is obtained by graduating from an ALA-accredited library/information science program and submitting a copy of your official transcripts to the department.
